Moonshine {Poem}

Sat under moonlight
as moonshine burns my throat
and you take another swig
without a grimace.
The humid air sleeves the
dirt and grime on my bare arms
and crickets lullaby the forest
that sinks into darkness.
Ethanol and stale tobacco
infused in your worn out vest
mix with nature’s perfume
and our dried out sweat.
I look towards you
with a lazy smile
but your gaze at me
is an enigma.
Perhaps curiosity,
maybe thoughtfulness,
or maybe you are hiding
a deep resentment.
But it is not the latter
for your eyes are soft
and you begin to speak
about yourself and your past.
So I decide tonight
is a happy night
as we both drink some more
and you finally open up.
